Looks like Apple is opening up its ecosystem even more by letting Siri work with third-party apps. It has been reported that the iPhone maker will release a software update for iPhones and iPads this year that will make Siri work better with third-party messaging apps. That’s news because for now when you ask Siri to call or send a message, it directs you to Apple’s Phone app or iMessage apps. In case you want to make a call or send a message via WhatsApp, you would have to specifically ask Siri for that.
As per a Bloomberg report, the update will upgrade Siri to automatically use the apps that are used more frequently to communicate with others. For instance, if an iPhone user text often using WhatsApp and then asks Siri to simply send a message to the same person, Siri will auto-detect the most used messaging platform and will choose WhatsApp. However, for all this to take place, developers would need to make their apps compatible with this feature. This is said to reach messaging apps first followed by calling apps.
The company has also started promoting third-party apps over its own apps on the App Store. As mentioned by the company a recent feature called App Store Stories has promoted just 1% of Apple’s own apps until now while the rest of the apps are from third-party developers.
This announcement, however, comes a few days after the company was in the headlines for being claimed to give its own apps preference over third-party apps. This, in turn, made it difficult for third-party app developers to reach the end-users.
When a US House antitrust panel recently asked Apple about this policy, the company’s spokesperson said that “Apple offers our users an experience that is only possible from the integration of hardware, software, and services. From the very first iPhone, we have included apps to provide customers with a great experience right out of the box for making phone calls, playing music, surfing the web, and more. With every generation of iPhone, we have advanced the built-in capabilities for our customers with a few default apps designed for great performance, long battery life, seamless integration, and industry-leading protections for security and privacy. We have also created the App Store, the safest place to get apps, so customers can choose from millions of apps to find the ones that further enhance their iPhone. In the few categories where Apple also has an app, we have many successful competitors and we’re proud that their success is responsible for almost 2 million U.S. jobs in a thriving multibillion-dollar market for developers. Our North Star is always to create the best products for our customers and that is why iPhone has the highest customer satisfaction in the industry.”
